President Trump directed Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to cancel his upcoming trip to North Korea Friday, citing stalled progress with denuclearization and the current U.S. trading relationship with China.

Secretary Pompeo retweeted President Trump to his page, verifying he’s received the message.

Just yesterday Pompeo announced Steve Biegun as a Special Representative to the rogue regime.

Ten days ago, Pompeo said the U.S. and North Korea were still in close cooridanation and talks to denuclearize the peninsula.

Palestinian fury as Trump admin cuts $200 million in aid.

The Palestinian Authority and Hamas have suspended talks with the U.S. in the wake of the opening of our Jerusalem embassy, but money still talks.  The Trump administration has just used a funding cut as a way of telling them that their old strategy isn’t working anymore.  Both governing bodies.  But rest assured: they are getting the message.  The Palestinian Authority has to stop payments to families of suicide bombers and other jihadists who lose their lives attacking Israelis.  Hamas, the terror organization that runs Gaza, is also being told to stop mass attempts to enter Israel for purposes of terror.

Matthew Lee of the Associated Press reports:

The Trump administration has decided to cut more than $200 million in bilateral aid to the Palestinians, following a review of the funding for projects in the West Bank and Gaza, the State Department said Friday.

The department notified Congress of the decision in a brief, three-paragraph notice sent first to lawmakers and then to reporters.  It said the administration will redirect the money to “high priority projects elsewhere.” …

“At the direction of President Trump, we have undertaken a review of U.S. assistance to the Palestinian Authority and in the West Bank and Gaza to ensure these funds are spent in accordance with U.S. national interests and provide value to the U.S. taxpayer,” the department said.  “As a result of that review, at the direction of the president, we will redirect more than $200 million … originally planned for programs in the West Bank and Gaza.”

“This decision takes into account the challenges the international community faces in providing assistance in Gaza, where Hamas control endangers the lives of Gaza’s citizens and degrades an already dire humanitarian and economic situation,” the notice said, without providing additional details.

In addition to this reduction in gifts from the American taxpayers to Palestinian entities intent on destroying Israel, the Trump administration has frozen $65 million in aid to the U.N. Relief and Works Administration (UNRWA), an agency shot through with corruption.

The usual sources of outrage are outraged that the sponsorship of terror and dedication to destruction of Israel do not merit gifts from America.

J Street, which the New York Times laughably describes as ” a liberal Jewish organization that advocates better relations between Israel and the Palestinians,” called the cuts a “moral outrage.”

“This is just the latest move by this administration to cruelly punish Palestinian civilians and marginalize and undercut Palestinian leadership,” the organization said.

Reuters reports:

U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy, a Democrat, criticized the Trump administration’s decision.

“Inhabitants of Gaza are already suffering severe hardships under the tyranny of Hamas and border restrictions imposed by Israel.  It is the Palestinian people, virtual prisoners in an increasingly volatile conflict, who will most directly suffer the consequences of this callous and ill-advised attempt to respond to Israel’s security concerns.”

All of this comes as a prelude to the unveiling of the Middle East Peace Plan being put together by Jared Kushner, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and others. I strongly suspect that this plan will call for both Palestinian entities to accept Israel’s right to exist (something Crown prince MbS already did, changing that kingdom’s stance since the founding of Israel) or face very unpleasant consequences. Removal of parts of the aid security blanket that has nurtured the world’s first hereditary group of “refugees” is only a first step.

The times, they are a’ changing, and it’s about time. Acceptance of Israel legitimacy and integration into its thriving economy would improve the lives of Palestinians more than any aid budget possibly could.

Failures In Refugee Vetting Process Lead To Criminal Activity In Our Hometowns.

$

As refugee contractors — who make money on every refugee they resettle — break into hyper-lobbying mode to demand that the Trump administration resettle “at least 75,000” in the coming fiscal year, the recent lies and criminal activity of five refugees who were resettled via the fraud-laden U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) are, once again, being willfully ignored.

Four improperly deemed “refugees” were charged with murder, lying to gain admission into the United States, and immigration benefits, among other crimes, while a fifth was charged with attempted murder.

In each case, the approved refugee likely would have been subjected to the much-touted, though often feckless, “enhanced vetting” that advocates say both ensures the legitimacy of the refugee claim and protects U.S. security interests. Nonetheless, at least four of the five successfully lied their way through what advocates claim is the “most vetted” interviewing process, duping refugee officers with their fabricated stories.

Sadly, these cases are simply the tip of the iceberg. As a Refugee Coordinator who covered the Middle East, Africa, Russia, Europe and Cuba for eight years, I had first-hand knowledge of country conditions and political realities, and I saw and read hundreds of fraudulent refugee claims. Disturbingly, the majority of refugee claims are ultimately approved, despite serious questions regarding the applicants’ reliability and truthfulness, often based solely on their testimony.

A blatant example is Iraqi refugee Omar Ameen, an accused long-time ISIS member, wanted for the murder of a police officer in Iraq, a crime he allegedly committed after he was approved as a refugee through the USRAP. In fact, during his so-called robust interviews with U.S. refugee officials, he admitted that he traveled back to Iraq on multiple occasions.

This, in and of itself, should have created red flags, since, by definition, a refugee fears persecution in his home country, and as such, cannot return. If a purported refugee is regularly traveling back to his home country, significant questions should have been raised regarding the legitimacy of his supposed persecution. Apparently, his lies were sufficient to overcome the “most robust vetting process.”

Similarly, the Ethiopian couple, who claimed to be Somali refugees who fled to China to escape their alleged persecution, were in actuality likely members of the Somali-based terror group Al-Shabab, responsible for major attacks that have left hundreds killed.

They were provided false Somali passports and instructed by the organization to pose as refugees to enter the United States. While their ultimate motive is not yet know, it appears from the many lies they told US refugee officials, their intent was malicious at best, and murderous at worst.

There’s another Ethiopian, now U.S.-citizen, who falsely claimed during the refugee application process that he never persecuted persons for their political opinion.

According to the indictment, the “refugee” served as a civilian interrogator in Ethiopia in the late 1970s, during a period known as the Red Terror. In that role, he is alleged to have participated in the brutal persecution of political prisoners.  Likewise, a man who actively participated in the Rwandan genocide and then lied to gain admission to the United States as a refugee was sentenced in 2017 to 15 years’ imprisonment.

Finally there’s the Iraqi refugee, admitted in 2012, who is charged with shooting a Colorado Springs policeman in the head, and who had already been in trouble with the law at least nine times, including drunken driving, trespassing, assault, extortion and illegally possessing a firearm. Yet despite his criminal record, which should have warranted deportation, was allowed to stay. He was ultimately charged with the above-mentioned crime.

One element that links these cases is that all individuals came from countries compromised by government corruption, political instability, and in several cases, widespread terrorism.

Despite claims that refugees are subject to the most intense scrutiny prior to resettlement into the United States, the bottom line is that in countries with ill-functioning governments or where no reliable data exists, it is virtually impossible to vet refugee candidates.

Mary Doetsch, a recently retired 25-year veteran of U.S. State Department, has extensive experience working with the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program.

BREAKING: NAFTA is Out, a New Trade Deal With Mexico is Officially Here.

Speaking from the White House Monday morning, President Trump announced a reboot of NAFTA after weeks of negotiations with Mexico.

“They used to call it NAFTA, we’re going to call it the United States Mexico Trade Agreement,” Trump said from the Oval Office, saying NAFTA has a negative connotation. “It’s a big day for trade. It’s a big day for our country. A lot of people felt we’d never get here.”

President Trump made the announcement and brought Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto onto a conference call. He then congratulated him on the new deal with the cameras rolling.

“It’s been an honor and you’ve been my friend,” Trump told Nieto. “Congratulations.”

President Trump was joined by Senior Adviser Jared Kushner, Chief of Staff Kelly, United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray and Mexican Economic Minister Ildefonso Guajardo.

President Trump signaled a deal was close at the end of last week and did so again before the announcement Monday morning.

The Trump administration will now work in partnership with Mexico to bring Canada to the table for a new and potentially separate deal.

“They want to negotiate very badly,” Trump said. “One way or another we’ll have a deal with Canada. It’ll either be a tariff on cars or it’ll be a negotiated deal. Frankly, I tariff on cars is a much easier way to go. Perhaps, the other would be much better for Canada.”

Trump strongly campaigned on the issue of repealing or completely redoing NAFTA, a trade deal he argues was “terrible” for the United States and destroyed manufacturing in states across the country.

Pentagon withdraws $300M in funding to Pakistan’s military.

Sept. 2 (UPI) — The U.S. Department of Defense suspended $300 milllion in military funding to Pakistan, citing the country’s failure to suppress militant groups.

Pentagon spokesman Koné Faulkner said Saturday that the agency suspend the funding to the Coalition Support Fund, which reimburses Pakistan’s military for fighting against terrorists.

“Due to a lack of decisive actions in support of the South Asia strategy, the remaining $300 million was reprogrammed,” he said.

Faulkner added the funds would be redistributed to other “urgent priorities,” pending congressional approval.

In January, Defense Secretary James Mattis said the Pentagon suspended $1 billion in aid to Pakistan for failing to effectively combat the Haqqani terrorist network.

At the time the Pentagon offered to restore funding if Pakistan took “decisive action” against the terrorist group, but Saturday’s announcement officially withdrew that offer.

“Our expectations are straightforward: Taliban and Haqqani leadership and attack planners should no longer be able to find safe haven or conduct operations from Pakistani soil,” Army Col. Robert Manning, director of defense press operations at the Pentagon, said in January.

The announcement comes ahead of U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s trip to Pakistan’s capital of Islamabad scheduled for Wednesday.

Why Trump Was Right to End Funding for the UN Palestinian Aid Organization.

$
0
0

Last week, the State Department announced that the Trump administration had concluded an internal review and decided to end all U.S. contributions to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

Part of the administration’s justification for the decision was the disproportionate level of U.S. financial support, but the more fundamental reason to end U.S. funding lies with the many flaws that have plagued the U.N. agency for decades.

Importantly, the U.S. has made clear that the decision to end funding does not mean it is abandoning the peace process or the Palestinian people:

[T]he United States will intensify dialogue with the United Nations, host governments, and international stakeholders about new models and new approaches, which may include direct bilateral assistance from the United States and other partners, that can provide today’s Palestinian children with a more durable and dependable path toward a brighter tomorrow.

Although details were not provided, presumably, the U.S. will shift some of the agency funding to the government of Jordan and to the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees to address the refugees and humanitarian consequences of the Syrian conflict and explore alternative ways to assist Palestinians outside of the UNRWA.

This decision is long overdue. The UNRWA has existed for more than 60 years as a “temporary” initiative to address the needs of Palestinian refugees from the 1948 Israeli-Arab conflict and to facilitate their resettlement and/or repatriation. It has evolved into a permanent institution providing services to multiple generations of Palestinian “refugees,” of whom a large majority live outside refugee camps, enjoy citizenship in other countries, or reside in the Palestinian-governed West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Despite receiving ongoing assistance from the UNRWA, the Palestinian refugee problem has only grown larger. The relief agency was set up to address a temporary crisis involving over 600,000 refugees defined as “persons whose normal place of residence was Palestine during the period 1 June 1946 to 15 May 1948, and who lost both home and means of livelihood as a result of the 1948 conflict.”

Many of these original refugees are deceased, but the refugee population has expanded to 5.3 million individuals because the UNRWA redefined and expanded its definition of “refugee.”

Today, the agency has made refugee status available to the “descendants of Palestine refugee males, including legally adopted children.” It classifies a Palestinian as a refugee even if he or she lives in the West Bank or in Gaza (territory governed by Palestinians) or earns citizenship in another country.

This is not consistent with the 1951 Convention or the policy of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees.

Substantial evidence indicates that the UNRWA has contributed to Palestinian extremism. For instance:

  • The agency has and likely continues to employ individuals affiliated with Hamas, a Palestinian Islamist extremist group in control of Gaza designated as a terrorist organization by the United States, Israel, and the European Union and that refuses to recognize Israel’s right to exist.
  • There have been frequent claims (backed by evidence) that Palestinian schools administered by the UNRWA have used textbooks and allowed the presence of materials that delegitimize Israel, denigrate Jews, and venerate martyrdom.
  • The UNRWA encourages the Palestinian fixation on a “right to return” to Israel, which impedes negotiations for a permanent peace agreement.
  • Hamas has used the agency’s facilities and schools to store weapons and divert assistance to its purposes.

These are not new revelations. Indeed, the George W. Bush administration reportedly blocked the reappointment of head of the agency in 2005 over concerns of his bias against Israel and failure to reform the agency to address the above concerns.

Numerous restrictions and requirements now apply under law to U.S. funding for the UNRWA and other aid to the Palestinians precisely because of these concerns.

Although there is a case for implementing the defunding more gradually, the Trump administration deserves credit for its willingness to take action. Previous administrations let the fear of the unknown lead them to continue support in the face of ever-more implacable Palestinian demands and mounting evidence that U.S. taxpayer dollars were being used indirectly or diverted to support Palestinian extremism and violence.

The U.S. has been enormously generous to the UNRWA, providing it with hundreds of millions of dollars annually—more than $6 billion since 1950. Unfortunately, that support did not bring the situation any closer to resolution.

On the contrary, it cemented the status quo and absolved Palestinian leaders of the responsibility to provide health care, education, and other basic services that sovereign governments—which the Palestinians claim to be—are expected to provide for their own people.

Contrary to the claims of the Palestinians, the U.S. is not “violating international law” by ending funding for the UNRWA. U.S. funding is voluntary, not a legal entitlement, and America reasonably expects that its support not be misused and that the Palestinians earnestly engage in the peace process.

Instead, Palestinian leaders have rejected increasingly generous offers since the 1990s. This intransigence, encouraged by Iran and rejectionist Arab leaders, lies at the root of the Palestinian refugee problem and harms the Palestinian people.

Continuing the status quo will only ensure that the UNRWA and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict continue their current dissatisfactory trajectories. Although it will likely cause short-term ramifications, the decision to defund this agency will, hopefully, force all parties to re-evaluate their underlying assumptions and refocus attention on what is necessary to end this protracted dispute.

25 Straight Minutes Of Illegal Aliens Crossing Into US Through Arizona Ranch.

Arizona rancher John Chilton’s 50,000-acre spread along the U.S.-Mexico border is allegedly ground zero for human smugglers, drug cartel members and illegal immigrants, and he has videos showing trespassers sneaking through his property.

A fifth-generation cattleman, the 79-year-old Chilton has long warned the government about the dangers of leaving lengthy stretches of the southwest border secured by nothing more than a barbed wire fence. To prove his point, he set up surveillance cameras throughout his property to document the comings and goings of trespassers from south of the border.

Chilton shared hours of video footage with Daily Caller News Foundation reporters, who are in Arizona to document life and crime in the southwest borderlands. Tim Foley, the founder of Arizona Border Recon, also shared his group’s surveillance footage with TheDCNF.

The surveillance videos, which are mostly from 2018 but also date back to 2016, show an unrelenting stream of alleged cartel scouts, drug mules and human smugglers — known as coyotes — using secret trails to work their way into the interior of the state. Many of the trespassers tote long guns and sport military-style camouflage, posing a threat Chilton knows from firsthand experience.

A U.S. Border Patrol agent was shot by smugglers in a remote section of Chilton’s ranch in June, according to The Washington Times. It was the latest in a long line of violent incidents that prove border security is not a priority for the government, according to Chilton, who is a prominent supporter of President Donald Trump’s efforts to build a border wall. (RELATED: Border Patrol Agent Shot In Possible Ambush Near US-Mexico Border)

Nikki Haley Addresses The Tyranny In Nicaragua.

$

Nicaragua’s advancing totalitarianism parallels what occurred in Venezuela according to UN Ambassador Nikki Haley.

At a recent UN Security Council Meeting she said Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega “are cut from the same corrupt cloth. They are both students of the same failed ideology. And they are both dictators who live in fear of their own people.”

Ortega is guilty of “killing, detaining, and brutalizing anyone who dares to oppose him” Haley noted. Citing figures from the Nicaraguan Association for Human Rights, she said that “over 448 people have been killed” and more than “2,000 have been injured.”

“The Ortega regime has long controlled the media by ensuring that television and radio stations are in the hands of family, friends, and corrupt allies,” Haley noted. And the Nicaraguan ruler installed his wife as Vice President, “banned opposition parties and rigged the Nicaraguan constitution to allow him three uninterrupted five-year terms,” and “is attempting to destroy the most respected institution that is rightfully standing up for the Nicaraguan people: the Catholic Church,” Haley said.

Many have already fled Nicaragua according to Haley: “Over 25,000 Nicaraguans have migrated to Costa Rica since the start of the crisis, with Honduras, Panama, and Mexico also receiving Nicaraguan migrants and asylum seekers.”

Pointing to the evacuations out of Syria and Venezuela into other countries, she warned that a mass exit from Nicaragua would create an influx of people into other countries in the region. “A Nicaraguan exodus would overwhelm its neighbors and create a surge of migrants and asylum seekers in Central America,” she explained.

Haley said that while the situation in Nicaragua is not currently as dire as the situation in Venezuela, “we know what’s coming if nothing changes.”

“We still have the opportunity to prevent history from being repeated,” she declared. “We still have the opportunity to prevent tyranny from threatening peace and security.”

And in addition to addressing topics like Nicaragua and Syria this week, Haley also addressed the widely discussed New York Times op-ed authored by an anonymous “senior official in the Trump administration.”

In a Washington Post op-ed published Friday, Haley criticized the anonymous author saying that the person should discuss disagreements directly with President Trump. She explained that she discusses her disagreements directly with the president, who sometimes even changes his mind:

Gil Gutknecht

He does not shut out his advisers, and he does not demand that everyone agree with him. I can talk to him most any time, and I frequently do. If I disagree with something and believe it is important enough to raise with the president, I do it. And he listens. Sometimes he changes course, sometimes he doesn’t.

Haley’s message to the mysterious writer:

To Mr. or Ms. Anonymous, I say: Step up and help the administration do great things for the country. If you disagree with some policies, make your case directly to the president. If that doesn’t work, and you are truly bothered by the direction of the administration, then resign on principle. There is no shame in that. But do not stay in your position and secretly undermine the president and the rest of our team. It is cowardly, it is anti-democratic, and it is a disservice to our country.

Trump’s Actions Reduce Iran’s Boasting To Begging Europe For Help.

$

Iran, reduced to begging after the Trump administration walked away from the disastrous nuclear deal in May, issued a warning to European nations that if they don’t play ball by November 4, Iran will opt out of the nuclear deal itself.

On November 4, the U.S. is scheduled to impose sanctions on Iran’s vital oil industry.

On Tuesday, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on state television that Iran had “clearly announced” to European nations that if its “main interests” in the nuclear deal are not addressed, “staying in the deal will not benefit us anymore. They have a deadline of Nov. 4 and from then on, any action by them would be useless.” Araghchi importuned, “As long as we can sell our oil, it will be in our interest to stay in the JCPOA.”

U.S. sanctions on Iran have already included banning Iran from buying dollars and trading gold and other precious metals, as well as targeting the automotive sector.

The European Union, desperate to appease Iran, had sworn to protect the nuclear deal, but their efforts to circumvent American sanctions have proven difficult to achieve.

Iran’s typical braggadocio has been jettisoned for a more obsequious approach, which didn’t go unnoticed:

And there’s more bad news for Iran as its economy tanks as a result of U.S. sanctions:

WATCH: Nikki Haley Fires Away: We Aren’t Going To Give Money To Anyone Who’s Anti-U.S.

$

Appearing with Bret Baier on Fox News’ Special Report on Wednesday, U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley spoke of the Trump Administration’s foreign policy perspective in characteristically blunt terms, asserting, “We are no longer going to give money to people who are against the U.S., or say, ‘Death to America,’ or do anything that would be anti-U.S.”

Haley began by speaking of the sea-change in the attitude around the world engendered by the foreign policy initiatives of the president:

I think he’s actually done a lot on foreign policy but in different ways. If you look at what he’s done with North Korea, it’s really led the international community to isolate North Korea to where they decide, they realize they have a decision to make. He led on the fact that he pulled out of the Iran deal. He’s forcing the entire world to admit the fact that Iran was not behaving properly. He’s led in Syria to make sure that chemical weapons are not being used and he’s warned against them being used again.

Haley then turned to Trump’s attitude toward South American countries with an anti-American bent, asserting, “I think that if you look in the Western Hemisphere, which we’ve spent the last two weeks focused on, whether it is Venezuela or Nicaragua, the messages are being sent that we are not going to support dictators.”

Then Haley extrapolated from South America to the rest of the world:

We are no longer going to give money to people who are against the U.S., or say, “Death to America,” or do anything that would be anti-U.S. We are now going to strategically start to work with our friends, and we are no longer going to be handouts for those who go against us.

The Study Saying The U.S. Is The Mecca For Mass Shootings Was Just Taken To The Woodshed.

$
0
0

Well, it’s another day, and another anti-gun study that’s shoddy. It comes with additional controversy since its author will not release his data or even open himself to questions about his work. In August, the Crime Prevention Research Center’s John Lott took to task an anti-gun study by Adam Lankford, who suggests the U.S. is the mecca for mass shootings, being the epicenter for 31 percent of them; all of this thanks to our rates of gun ownership. Again, it’s not the criminal’s fault; it’s all about the gun, which apparently has magic powers that forces people to commit acts of violence. Regardless, former President Obama cited it, as have a slew of media organizations:

Lankford claims to have “complete” data on such shooters in 171 countries. However, because he has neither identified the cases nor their location nor even a complete description on how he put the cases together, it is impossible to replicate his findings.

It is particularly important that Lankford share his data because of the extreme difficulty in finding mass shooting cases in remote parts of the world going back to 1966. Lack of media coverage could easily lead to under-counting of foreign mass shootings, which would falsely lead to the conclusion that the U.S. has such a large share.

Lankford’s study reported that from 1966 to 2012, there were 90 public mass shooters in the United States and 202 in the rest of world. We find that Lankford’s data represent a gross undercount of foreign attacks. Our list contains 1,448 attacks and at least 3,081 shooters outside the United States over just the last 15 years of the period that Lankford examined.  We find at least fifteen times more mass public shooters than Lankford in less than a third the number of years.

Even when we use coding choices that are most charitable to Lankford, his 31 percent estimate of the US’s share of world mass public shooters is cut by over 95 percent.  By our count, the US makes up less than 1.43% of the mass public shooters, 2.11% of their murders, and 2.88% of their attacks. All these are much less than the US’s 4.6% share of the world population. Attacks in the US are not only less frequent than in other countries, they are also much less deadly on average.

Yeah, I can see why Lankford would want to head for the bunker concerning questions on his work (via CPRC):

“In phone calls and emails from RealClearPolitics, Lankford was asked how he supplemented the NYPD methods. He did not answer those queries. Nor has he responded to requests for his raw data, which is missing from his published paper, or to clear up basic questions. One of them is why he lists “shooters” instead of “shootings,” the term most criminologists use when comparing data. This is significant because mass shootings outside the United States often involve multiple triggermen. Also, although Lankford cites 202 shooters globally from 1966 to 2012, these cases aren’t listed in any appendix and he only lists totals for a handful of countries. This means that other scholars can’t replicate his research to test his findings — or point out shootings he overlooked.”

— Carl Cannon, Washington Bureau Chief, Real Clear Politics, September 4, 2018

“Lankford declined an interview request about his study and told Fox News in an email that he’s “’not interested in giving any serious thought to John Lott or his claims.’”

— Lukas Mikelionis, a reporter at Fox News, September 1, 2018

“I am not interested in giving any serious thought to John Lott or his claims,” he said in response to an email seeking comment. . . .”

— Stephen Dinan, a reporter at The Washington Times, August 29, 2018

“Unlike Lankford, Lott has released all of his data in nearly 500 pages of appendixes so people can reach their own conclusions. Lankford declined a request to release his research or to discuss in any way his findings in comparison to Lott’s report. However, in an email exchange with The Fact Checker, Lankford acknowledged the Mumbai attack in 2008 that killed 168 people was not included in his overseas tally.”

—Glenn Kessler, Washington Post, September 5, 2018.

Lott furthered turned this study’s results into sashimi in a NY Post op-ed:

Lankford cites a 2012 New York Police Department report which he claims is “nearly comprehensive in its coverage of recent decades.” He also says he supplemented the data and followed “the same data collection methodology employed by the NYPD.” But the NYPD report warns that its own researchers “limited [their] Internet searches to English-language sites, creating a strong sampling bias against international incidents,” and thus under-count foreign mass shootings.

Does Lankford’s paper also have that problem?

A new report from the Crime Prevention Research Center, which one of us heads, has just finished collecting cases using the same definition of mass public shootings used by Lankford.

We know of no way to discover most of the cases where four people have been shot to death in an incident in Africa or many other parts of the world during the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s or even 1990s, and that is the reason the new study just looked at the last 15 years from 1998 to 2012 of the 47 years he examined.

Lankford’s data grossly undercount foreign attacks. We found 1,423 attacks outside the United States. Looking at just a third of the time Lankford studied, we still found 15 times as many shooters.

Even when we use coding choices that are most charitable to Lankford, such as excluding any cases of insurgencies or battles over territory, his estimate of the US share of shooters falls from 31 percent to 1.43 percent. It also accounts for 2.1 percent of murders, and 2.88 percent of their attacks. All these are much less than the United States’ 4.6 percent share of the population.

Of the 86 countries where we have identified mass public shootings, the US ranks 56th per capita in its rate of attacks and 61st in mass public shooting murder rate. Norway, Finland, Switzerland and Russia all have at least 45 percent higher rates of murder from mass public shootings than the United States.

When Lankford’s data is revised, the relationship between gun ownership rates and mass public shooters disappears.

Well, further discussion on the data is over since Lankford isn’t answering questions, telling Fox News and Circa “I am not interested in giving any serious thought to John Lott or his claims,” he said in response to an email seeking comment.” This is why Second Amendment supporters, conservatives, gun owners, republicans, and rural voters don’t trust the push for more government funding for gun control studies—and for good reason, just look at this fiasco. If this is what comes from one study that appears to be erroneous, what will come when government becomes a main funding partner in these ventures? Holy hell!

Remember Obama’s surgeon general, who tried to make this a public health crisis?

Could you imagine if Obama and other anti-gunners had endless government-funded studies compiled by left wing academics? Oh, it would be the slog of the century…maybe.

This study might not have had that intent—or who knows it could have been—but what is certain is that the anti-gun Left would use these studies compiled by academia, which is disgustingly liberal, and have ample political ammunition to push for terrible pieces of legislation across the country, which chip away of our constitutional rights. It’s not worth the risk. Though the Crime Prevention Research Center seems busy, doling out their data that undercuts or refutes the liberal consensus on Second Amendment issues. Carry on, folks. Carry on.

Trump announces tariffs on $200B in Chinese goods.

President Trump on Monday announced that he is directing the U.S. Trade Representative to impose tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese imports, a move expected to escalate the trade war between the world’s two largest economies.

The tariffs are expected to go into effect on Sept. 24 and will be set at a 10 percent level until the end of the year, after which they will increase to 25 percent.

The tariffs will hit everything from fish such as salmon and halibut, vegetables, nuts, grains, orange juice and metals including titanium and uranium.

Changes to the proposed list were made after the Trade Representative received comments and held hearings on the issue.

The president has vowed to do another round of tariffs on $267 billion on Chinese goods if Beijing retaliates against this round.

If Trump follows through with a third batch of tariffs, they could more than cover China’s imports into the United States.<

The U.S. is using Section 301 of the trade law to levy the tariffs, saying that China has for years escaped punishment for engaging in unfair trade practices that include intellectual property and technology theft.

“These practices plainly constitute a grave threat to the long-term health and prosperity of the United States economy,” Trump said in a statement.

Senior officials at the White House say they have urged Chinese officials for at least the past year to fix systemic problems in their economy that hurt U.S. businesses and workers. But so far no changes have happened.

U.S. and Chinese officials met briefly last month without any solutions to the trade dispute.

Senior administration officials said Monday in a call with reporters that there was nothing to announce on whether the U.S. and China would hold additional meetings to negotiate on trade.

China’s foreign ministry on Monday said that Beijing would retaliate again if Trump implements the new tariffs, Reuters reported.

“China has had many opportunities to fully address our concerns. Once again, I urge China’s leaders to take swift action to end their country’s unfair trade practices. Hopefully, this trade situation will be resolved, in the end, by myself and President Xi of China, for whom I have great respect and affection,” Trump said a statement.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin last week proposed another round of talks with Chinese Vice Premier Liu He later this month in an effort to ease tensions in the escalating trade war.

A few goods were removed from the initial list that included some Apple products, bicycle helmets, playpens and some consumer electronics.

The U.S. and China exchanged 25 percent tariffs of $50 billion on each other’s goods over the summer, escalating tensions between the two nations.

Trump’s protectionist trade policies have been met with skepticism from leading Republicans and business groups.

“Any time tariffs are imposed I worry that Americans will be forced to pay extra costs — in this case on nearly half of U.S. imports from China,” House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady (R-Texas) said Monday.

“I continue to emphasize that the ultimate means to create an effective outcome is for President Trump and President Xi to engage constructively to develop a long-term and profound solution that levels the playing field for American manufacturers, farmers and workers,” Brady added.

“The U.S. economy runs on pro-growth policies, but that’s not what tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods deliver,” said U.S. Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Thomas Donohue in a statement.

Donohue agreed that the administration has serious issues to resolve with China on issues such as market access, unfair subsidies, technology theft and cybersecurity but said there are less harmful ways to achieve better trade.

“Today’s decision makes clear that the administration did not heed the numerous warnings from American consumers and businesses about rising costs and lost jobs on Main Street, in factories, and on farms and ranches across the country,” Donohue said.

China Retaliates! Levies Tariffs on $60B in U.S. Goods.

China lobbed retaliatory tariffs on $60 billion in U.S. imports Tuesday after the U.S. announced new tariffs across $200 billion in Chinese goods.

The $60 billion is in line with what China said it was preparing should the United States go through with the tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese goods. President Donald Trump flagged the move late on Monday.

On Tuesday China announced it would go forward with the $60 billion tariff package, according to the Associated Press.

The U.S. Trade Representative’s Office finalized and released the list of $200 billion in Chinese goods to be levied with tariffs on Monday evening. The action came after a months-long section 301 investigation into Chinese trade practices and the potential additional tariffs. The USTR investigation found, “China’s acts, policies and practices related to technology transfer, intellectual property and innovation are unreasonable and discriminatory and burden or restrict U.S. commerce.”

The new U.S. tariffs will go into effect on September 24, 2018 at 10 percent until the end of 2018. On January 1, 2019 the tariffs on these $200 billion in Chinese goods will rise to 25 percent.

The USTR released lists for additional tariffs on $50 billion in Chinese goods in June and August. It noted in a Monday release noting these previous tariffs, “Unfortunately, China has been unwilling to change its policies involving the unfair acquisition of U.S. technology and intellectual property. Instead, China responded to the United States’ tariff action by taking further steps to harm U.S. workers and businesses.”

“In these circumstances, the President has directed the U.S. Trade Representative to increase the level of trade covered by the additional duties in order to obtain elimination of China’s unfair policies,” Monday’s USTR statement said. “The Administration will continue to encourage China to allow for fair trade with the United States.”

U.S. and Chinese trade delegations headed respectively by U.S. Treasury Sec. Steve Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He are scheduled to meet September 27-28 in Washington, DC.

Trump Defends Tariffs, ‘Rebuilt’ China with Tremendous U.S. Money

President Donald Trump said in Tuesday’s White House joint press conference with Poland’s President Andrzej Duda that the U.S. has “just started” dealing with China on trade and it should have been done a long time ago.

Trump’s response came after a reporter asked him if his trade tariffs police are working, given the U.S. trade deficit increase. “We’ve just started,” president Trump told the reporter. “This should have been done for the last 20 years.” He repeatedly said that something should have been done long ago to push back on China’s trade practices. He harkened back to the establishment of the World Trade Organization (WTO) 20 years ago, saying that China has taken advantage on trade through the organization since then.

China “rebuilt their country with tremendous amounts of money coming out of the United States,” said Trump. He said he does watch trade deficits, though they are not everything and not always exact.

“We are the piggy bank to the world,” said the U.S. president. “We’ve been ripped off by China…We’ve been ripped off by, excuse me Mr. President, the European Union,” which he remarked to Duda somewhat lightheartedly that Poland is a part of.

“We’ve come to a conclusion with Mexico,” Trump said, pointing to the recently announced U.S.-Mexico Trade Agreement. That agreement is in the process of ultimate formation and journey through Congress. President Trump called it a “good deal for both parties.”

The U.S. and Canada have continued talks with the possibility that Canada could still join the U.S.-Mexico agreement or pursue a bilateral U.S.-Canada agreement. Trump said Canada has also taken advantage of the U.S., though he added, “We love Canada” and “the people of Canada.” He pointed, as he has before, to massive Canadian tariffs on dairy imports.

Trump then turned his attention to European Commission President Jean Claude Junker, calling him “a tough man,” “nasty,” and a “tough cookie.” Trump said he tried three times to get Junker to negotiate and Junker told him that the EU didn’t want to. Trump said he then told Junker that the U.S. would levy tariffs on European automobiles, and Junker then came to the negotiating table. “We now have some semblance of a deal,” said Trump.

He said the U.S. has been abused and taken advantage of by almost every country.

President Duda backed up President Trump by saying, through a translator, that the U.S. president is saying “America first” and he, as the president of Poland, is saying “Poland first.” He said they understand each other very well. Duda said Trump knows how to calculate very well and takes care of the United States. He spoke of a balance of trade exchange and a clash of interests, and emphasized it is important to make sure both countries win and lose as little as possible.

Early in the press conference, Trump recalled his trip to Poland and speech at the location of the Warsaw uprising. He thanked President Duda for Poland’s commitment to meeting the two percent defense spending threshold under NATO.

He remarked on Poland’s construction of a gas pipeline from Norway to Poland. He also commented that the U.S. is the largest producer of energy in the world.

Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo were also present for the press conference.

The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits unexpectedly fell last week.

Claims hit their lowest level in nearly 49 years and pointed to robust labor market conditions.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits slipped 1,000 to a seasonally adjusted 204,000 for the week ended Sept. 8, the lowest level since December 1969, the Labor Department said on Thursday.

The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits unexpectedly fell last week, hitting its lowest level in nearly 49 years and pointing to robust labor market conditions.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits slipped 1,000 to a seasonally adjusted 204,000 for the week ended Sept. 8, the lowest level since December 1969, the Labor Department said on Thursday. Data for the prior week was revised to show 2,000 more applications received than previously reported.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast claims rising to 210,000 in the latest week. The claims data covered last Monday’s Labor Day holiday. Claims tend to be volatile around public holidays.

The Labor Department said only claims for Maine were estimated last week. The four-week moving average of initial claims, considered a better measure of labor market trends as it irons out week-to-week volatility, fell 2,000 last week to 208,000, also the lowest level since December 1969.

The labor market is viewed as being near or at full employment. It continues to strengthen, with nonfarm payrolls increasing by 201,000 jobs in August and annual wage growth notching its biggest gain in more than nine years. Job openings hit an all-time high of 6.9 million in July.

Help wanted jobs employment jobless claims small business

Jobless claims fell, despite ongoing trade tensions.

The Federal Reserve’s Beige Book report, which was published on Wednesday, described the labor market as “tight throughout the country, with most districts reporting widespread shortages.”

Though there have been reports of some companies either planning job cuts or laying off workers because of trade tensions between the United States and its major trade partners, they have been partially offset by increased hiring in the steel industry.

Economists, however, warn of widespread job losses if the Trump administration presses ahead with tariffs on nearly all Chinese imports. President Donald Trump last week threatened duties on another $267 billion worth of Chinese goods on top of a $200 billion tariff list that is awaiting his decision.

Washington has already slapped duties on $50 billion worth of Chinese imports, provoking retaliation from Beijing. The United States has also engaged in tit-for-tat tariffs with other trade partners, including the European Union, Canada and Mexico.

Thursday’s claims report also showed the number of people receiving benefits after an initial week of aid dropped 15,000 to 1.70 million for the week ended Sept. 1, the lowest level since December 1973. The four-week moving average of the so-called continuing claims decreased 8,250 to 1.71 million, the lowest level since November 1973.

More Than 22 Million Illegal Aliens In U.S., Study Finds

A new study by two Yale professors and an instructor at MIT puts the number of illegal aliens in America at 22.1 million — more than twice previous estimates.

Most media outlets have reported that some 11.3 million illegals live in the U.S., but researchers Edward Kaplan, Jonathan Feinstein and Mohammad Fazel‐Zarandi say that’s not even close to the actual number.

“Our original idea was just to do a sanity check on the existing number,” said Kaplan, a professor of operations research at Yale School of Management, according to a report in Yale Insights.

“Instead of a number which was smaller, we got a number that was 50% higher. That caused us to scratch our heads,” Kaplan said.

Feinstein, professor of economics and management at Yale, added, “There’s a number that everybody quotes, but when you actually dig down and say, ‘What is it based on?’ You find it’s based on one very specific survey and possibly an approach that has some difficulties. So we went in and just took a very different approach.”

The 11.3 million number is gleaned from data in the Census Bureau’s annual American Community Survey. “It’s been the only method used for the last three decades,” said Fazel‐Zarandi, a senior lecturer at the MIT Sloan School of Management.

So the researchers set out to attempt to find out if that number was accurate, using different methods.

The approach in the new research was based on operational data, such as deportations and visa overstays, and demographic data, including death rates and immigration rates. “We combined these data using a demographic model that follows a very simple logic,” Kaplan says. “The population today is equal to the initial population plus everyone who came in minus everyone who went out. It’s that simple.”

“The analysis we’ve done can be thought of as estimating the size of a hidden population. People who are undocumented immigrants are not walking around with labels on their foreheads. … There are very few numbers we can point to and say this is carved in stone,” Kaplan said.

According to their findings, the population of illegal aliens has been somewhat stable for a decade after booming in the 1990s and early 2000s.

“The trajectory is the same. We see the same patterns happening, but they’re just understating the actual number of people who have made it here,’ said Fazel‐Zarandi. “They are capturing part of this population, but not the whole population,” he added.

Said Feinstein: “Our purpose is just to provide better information,” adding that “this paper is not oriented towards politics or policy. I want to be very clear: this paper is about coming up with a better estimate of an important number.”

“We wouldn’t want people to walk away from this research thinking that suddenly there’s a large influx happening now. It’s really something that happened in the past and maybe was not properly counted or documented,” he said.

The U.S. is the Only Improving Economy in the World Right Now, Finance Chiefs Say.

The United States has a huge advantage in the still-escalating global trade fights: it is the only major economy to score an ‘improving’ score in CNBC’s latest survey of corporate executives.

The U.S. economy is viewed as “improving,” according to the latest quarterly CNBC Global CFO Council survey. China, which had been viewed as improving earlier in the year, was downgraded to just “stable.” The Eurozone, which had been viewed as “improving” for most of last year and in the first quarter of this year, entered its second quarter as merely “stable.”

CNBC CFO Survey results show that the U.S. is the only economy to score as “improving.”

The U.S. is also the only country to have scored “improving” in each of the previous four quarters.

The results suggest that the U.S. is in a much stronger position than others to handle any economic drag from rising tariffs and retaliatory trade barriers.
